Days Seven and Eight: Notice Me, Senpai!

Whoops! I forgot to update yesterday, though I suppose it doesn't really matter too much if not much has been happening, does it? It's like visiting with family or friends all the time; sometimes it's better to have a gap in between so that you have more to talk about when you do reconvene. I will say that yesterday the peanuts I put out the day before were sitting untouched on the walkway, much to my dismay. I've gotten better at accepting that this is just not the best time of year to be feeding birds in general, however. I realized this when I went to the Job Lot up the street, browsing bird feeders that were advertised in the weekly flyer. After loading a few bird feeders and a bird bath into my cart, it occurred to me that I didn't have one of those standing poles from which you hang a bird feeder. I asked an associate if the store carried any, and she told me it was too early in the season, and that they would carry more items like that when Spring got closer.

I bought the bird feeders anyway, but now I'm contemplating my life choices, haha. Should I commit to this? I know that I have a huge bag of birdseed in my kitchen that needs to be put to use, but I feel like feeding the birds and bird watching could be a bit of a slippery slope. I suppose that's any hobby though. Part of me does wonder if it would be better to set that equipment up in the backyard rather than the front yard, since it's quieter back there. But I've already started trying to feed the crows in my front yard, so I wonder if I would do any better switching it up. I also wonder if I'm thinking too much into this...😅

Today I woke up and walked over to the living room window, as I've been doing every morning now for the past week, checking on the status of my peanuts. They were gone! I don't know what sort of crafty creature keeps taking them, whether it's birds or squirrels, and I guess I won't really know unless I set up some sort of surveillance camera. Ha! So I went out to drop some more peanuts onto the walkway, and wouldn't you know it - at that same time, a big crow flies overhead and starts to caw, flying into the distance as its caws continue to echo. I tossed some peanuts into the grass so it could see what I was doing, although I'm not sure if it noticed. I'm pretty sure I heard other crows caw in response, but none of them have come by to my yard just yet. It's been such a quiet morning, the sound of peanuts dropping feels like it pierced the stillness as it clattered against the stone. I am excited to see whether the food disappears again or not! It's just nice to know that the birds are still out there; it definitely seems like a livelier morning from what I could hear.

I wouldn't doubt it if there are birds taking the peanuts earlier in the morning while I'm asleep, or if there is still some apprehension from neighboring crows. I'm sure it will take some time for them to open up and trust me, assuming they notice me at all. I've heard that it can take months for people to build trust with these birds. So I'll remind myself not to be too impatient.

I'll leave you with a picture of something I saw at the store yesterday. There's always something lately!
