Day Sixteen: Out for Blood
I haven't had much of a drive for writing lately. I didn't even get a look at the crows eating today - I could hear them and later saw that quite a few nuts were missing, but I didn't want to give up the opportunity to cuddle with Snowy, as she's mostly been resting alone lately (unusual for her, given she's normally very clingy). I feel guilty, but my head's been in a different place. I will say that, once I'm started, writing can be pretty cathartic. I don't know who actually reads these posts, but it's just somewhat of a relief being able to let go of these thoughts for a while. I'm hoping the week ahead brings some good news, but I'm bracing myself just in case...
One thing that did stand out to me today: as I was getting into my car, I heard frantic caws in the sky above...as I glanced up, I saw three crows attacking a huge hawk! I don't know the context of the situation or what kind of hawk it was (from what I remember, it was light brown with a white chest mottled with brown streaks). I just remember how much larger the hawk was than any one of the crows, and yet all three were fiercely fighting it in midair. I wonder what happened? It happened so fast. I was reading that crows can exhibit a behavior called mobbing, where they form a group and attack a larger predator. Hawks will sometimes try to make off with young/baby crows but it typically expends a lot of energy trying to avoid agile adult crows so it's not always something they go out of their way to do. Often crows gang up on birds like hawks because they are territorial, and since it's not nesting season, I'm guessing that was the case. Can't know for sure though! All I know is, I've never seen anything like that before. Wow!
