Day Twelve: After the Storm
Woke up this morning to sunshine and cawing filling the space where the rain had been before; today was more of the same as far as the routine goes, except I did see a hungry little squirrel dine-and-dash on some of the wet peanuts leftover from yesterday. I wanted to see what could be captured on video - as much as I try to observe and remember, I don't always look for specifics when I feed the birds. (I'm usually too enthralled with the idea of gaining their trust.) I set up my phone in the window and, surprisingly, got a really nice vantage point of the walkway with the lens against the window! So I left out new peanuts near the wet ones, went inside, and hit record.
Nothing happened for about ten minutes or so except for the squirrel coming and going, but wouldn't you know it, the crows arrived - one to start with, then the rest to follow. Thankfully, they didn't seem to pay mind to my phone in the window (which I'm sure is much less threatening than my figure looking through the blinds). The first crow to arrive pecked for what seemed like a while at one of the wet peanuts but managed to get it open (I'm sure the lack of crunch made things harder). His buddies arrived and bounced here and there, gathering what they could and helping themselves. The squirrel returned in a show of desperation, trying for what nuts it could, but was promptly chased away by one of the crows. They certainly weren't having it!
I feel like the same group must be coming each day. I can't be certain, but it's just a feeling. It's always the same number of birds, entering the scene once the sentry crow flies in and ensures everything is fine. Every morning, I hear that same caw as I head outside - the caw that seems to line up with my signature two-beat whistle. Is it a coincidence or is it that they've gotten to know me? I want to give credit where credit is due, but who really knows for sure.
Meanwhile, I've been keeping my coworkers updated about my escapades. One of them is excited to know about the unfolding saga - a few others are unsettled by crows and feel them 'creepy' and evil. It's sad to me that so many people feel that way...I guess humans tend to fear what they don't understand? It gets a little lonely that most people don't really seem to share in my excitement for this...but I guess I can't always expect them to see things through my eyes. I won't let it keep me from enjoying it, though..
