Day Ten: Camera Shy
Fridays are my early days - maybe normal for most but I don't really have a normal schedule (someday!). So peanuts went out earlier than they have all week, as I wanted to leave some before I headed out on my commute. First, I sat down with my breakfast - the birds get to eat after I do, assuming there were any around at that hour! As I was sitting down, though, I laughed - cawing, clear as day, outside the living room window! They HAVE been watching me.
I finished my Cream of Wheat and threw on some clothes; as I peeked through the blinds, I noticed not one, but three birds, at the far reaches of my lawn and the neighboring curb, standing there almost expectantly! "Sorry guys," I thought, "if you want food, I gotta get out there." As I went outside, they flew away, but not far - one was within eyesight, perched on a nearby power line, and the others were in the trees. I tossed the peanuts in front of me, whistling, and went back inside, peeking through the peephole. Not long after, a cluster of five crows descended a few at a time onto the walkway. It's just as I'd hoped!
Here's where I goofed: thinking they might be too busy to see me, I tried slipping my phone through one of the blinds to take video. Being exceptionally smart and perceptive though, they stopped eating and all flew off, as I heard scattered frantic cries. I was worried they wouldn't return, but they did come back one by one after a short while. I saw maybe two or three at most, not five like before. I don't blame them for being apprehensive - who knows what my motives may be? Most people don't feed crows. And do I have trust issues? That...goes without saying, ahaha. So I totally get it. Regardless, I'm glad they still trusted me enough to come back - maybe with time things will get better and I'll find a way of taking pictures stealthily, without scaring them off.
As I headed to my car, I brought the bag of nuts with me and tossed some more down, as a sort of peace offering for any remaining crows nearby. Time will tell what happens next!
