Day Six: A Glimmer of Hope
Still no crows in my yard, I'm sad to report - nor have I seen them for most of the day. My peanut pile for today has been left untouched, it seems! But there is hope yet! After I came home from work yesterday, eyes barely open, I was surprised to see that the peanuts I left out before I left for my shift were gone completely! (Jeff didn't happen to see who took them...could have been squirrels, but at least something is enjoying a meal.) I happened to spot a crow a ways away today on a neighboring street, but it must have paid me no mind. I do believe birds are nearby, but maybe just finding shelter rather than food? I'm tempted to take a drive to the park down the road with my bag of peanuts and see if I can spot any of them. Did you know crows can travel up to 30 miles on a winter's day (supposedly) in search of food? Maybe they've found a reliable source? I would have a good laugh if I found them all congregating at the new Taco Bell down the street...I think everyone can enjoy a nice bag of crunchy cinnamon twists, human or otherwise.
I've been thinking about getting a crow call online and seeing what happens if I use it outside my door. I'm a little afraid, however - I've heard mixed things about it attracting crows. Namely, it does attract crows, but people have said it also...pisses them off sometimes? I'm not sure I want to take that chance - it feels a bit like using a cheat code. Good things come to those who wait, but I wonder how long I'll be waiting for ANY kind of bird to show up nearby? Maybe I'll set up a bird bath and a standalone songbird feeder and see what happens...I do have a big bag of seed and I'm sure there are lots of hungry little birds who'd enjoy it.
In other news, I found a board game I had thrifted years ago but never really played - wouldn't you know, it's got a hungry raven as its main character? (Didn't I mention I've been seeing little signs everywhere lately?) It's called "Orchard" - it's meant for kids, but it's a really cute game with wooden pieces and dice, and the object is to pick all the fruit from the fruit trees before the "voracious raven" steals them all. Gotta love how these birds are always painted in a bad light, haha. It's still adorable, though! Jeff and I managed to collect all the fruit and win the game. I wonder if my nephew would like this someday. I'm including a picture!
