Day Fourteen: Getting Bolder
Today marks two weeks that I've been involved in this weird little hobby of feeding the local crows! I'm in pretty deep now - the day I decide to stop is probably the day I'll be hearing about it from the trees. I'm happy to report that the crows returned today - five of them total. I wonder if they're a family? I assume it's the same group that's been visiting just about every day. All those birds who flooded my neighbors' lawns recently - where did they come from, I wonder? I know that crows tend to roost in groups, related and unrelated, but isn't that usually in the evening, for protection? Do they feed in the same way? I wonder what drew them there. It would seem I wonder a lot of things lately.
I've been getting bolder, like the squirrel that swoops in on the peanuts I leave out from time to time. After the birds had their fill of food, they took to the power lines above and were cawing quite a bit, which is new for me. Usually they retreat somewhere else instead of lingering around. I couldn't help myself, so I went outside with my bag of peanuts, whistled once, and said "Hello!" as I dropped more peanuts onto the empty shells that had been left there. Surprisingly, the crows didn't leave, but instead watched me. Though, when I looked up and said "hello" again after that, they did fly off. Color me guilty for wanting to see if they'd tolerate me at a shorter distance, haha. Well, they know me now. I wonder if they'll be more comfortable in my presence with time. I've heard it can take months for people to bond with them, so I like to think a lot's already happened these past few weeks. We'll see if they come back tomorrow! Maybe...maybe not...maybe my dumb ass has crossed some sort of invisible line, ha.
